Software Development Co-op

Jan 2026 – Aug 2026
Optum (UnitedHealth Group Incorporated)
  • Developed and maintained C# backend microservices for a cloud-based enterprise medical imaging platform, supporting DICOM (C-STORE/C-MOVE) ingestion/retrieval and HL7 v2 ADT workflows across multi-tenant environments.
  • Engineered C# and Selenium end-to-end integration and UI automation tests (FastConnect) to validate patient/study metadata consistency, authorization rules, and parallel retrieval performance.
  • Implemented full-stack dropdown/table features by connecting frontend UI components with backend C# RESTful APIs and business models to optimize data loading and user interactions.
  • Strengthened CI/CD pipeline hygiene by updating SonarQube and GitHub Actions workflows to automatically clean up build artifacts and resolve security vulnerabilities post-analysis.
  • Investigated distributed system issues across API gateways, microservices, and object-storage layers using DCMTK, Insomnia, and log tracing to isolate protocol and downstream processing errors.

APIGM Co-op Application

Dear Hiring Manager,

I'm excited to apply for a Computer Science Co-op position. As a third-year student from the University of British Columbia, I am passionate in sports devices and fascinated by how cutting-edge technology enhances human performance. Software developer is a perfect example for this innovation, and I am eager for an opportunity to contribute.

I am currently in a Software Development Co-op at Optum (UnitedHealth Group Incorporated) from January to August 2026, where I worked on backend development using C#. I contributed to building and maintaining microservices, collaborated with team members in an Agile environment, and gained extensive hands-on experience with tools such as Git, Docker, and CI/CD pipelines.

I have gained solid experience with software testing through coursework and personal projects. For instance, I designed my project as a course scheduling tool for students so that they can manage their academic scheduling more efficiently. During development, I designed and implemented sets of test cases for different objects to validate interface behavior and data consistency. This experience deepened my understanding of test case design, and more importantly, managing the dynamic evolution of object functions during ongoing development.

I am eager to bring my enthusiasm, technical skills, and collaborative spirit to your team. Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to the opportunity to further discuss how I can contribute to your mission.

Sincerely,

Jason (Zixu) Ma

UBC Science Co-op Student
